Preserving the memories in a family crib. I received a phone call after an article ran in our local news paper. The woman on the other end told me she had a 61 year old crib and wondered if there was anything I might be able to make out of it, as gifts for her sisters. This crib was the family crib that her and her sisters all slept in as children that has sat in a bag, tucked in the corned, of her husbands shop for years. I created a pair of earrings for my client and 6 necklaces for each of the sisters incorporating not only a piece of the rung of the crib but also a piece of the wooden balls that mounted around the top of the railings.
Later she decided she might like something for her husband and sons which I created magazine holders for out of the crib rungs and some local barn wood. As Christmas approached she wondered if I might be able to make something for her grandchildren as well. Pull toys were created for the grandsons and later when her granddaughter was born a small doll crib housed the last rungs of that special crib.
What an honor for me to be able to take this heirloom of theirs and make 13 new functional creations for each of them to cherish for years to come.
Re-purposing family heirlooms, that are no longer functional, is a great way to share the special memory, as new keepsakes, with the whole family.
